Club Updates and Events
Birthdays: Jack Hayes on 1/22, Rev Richard on 1/24
Anniversaries: First year in honor of Rev Ernie’s passing
Health and Wellness: Martha Bergeson is reportedly not doing very well. She was on the
Cape for service last weekend.
Interclubs: Tuesday’s Division Meeting was an interclub with Jack B, Bob W, Len, Bob D,
Sam and Mary Jane in attendance to discuss the safe harbor playground and the April
Caucus. A second interclub took place Thursday at the Daniel Webster Inn with the Sandwich
Club thanks to Jack B (and son Matthew), Len, Ginny, and Bob W.
Builders Club: Yesterday’s meeting had an overflowing crowd with almost half of the
participants being teachers and guests for a program on Haiti at the school. The Builders
Club is spearheading a fundraising drive to aid a mission just north of Port-au-Prince in Haiti.
Water, food and medical supplies are all desperately needed. The volunteers assisting this
humanitarian mission are local to Orleans, and they will be our speakers next Friday.
Nauset Regional High School Key Club: This club is in full swing due largely to President
Maya’s leadership. The combined effort was highly successful with AmeriCorps at Stop and
Shops on Martin Luther King Jr day to collect food for the Food Pantries on the Cape. They
are a very enthusiastic group, with full student leadership.
50/50 Raffle Winners: John Duncan gave his winnings to the builders club. Tony Cercena
won an antique bookend from the Dave Wadsworth Kiwanis collection.

A Very Special Meeting Indeed!
John Duncan receives his Red Jacket from Bob
Widegren, on behalf of our club.
Congratulations, John!
As Mashpee club members retrieve their bell, Len
remarked, “We’re all glad they finally came, since this
sounds more like a geisha gong. We even threatened
to charge interest.”
Welcome to Gov Dave,
who surprised us all with a visit this morning. He expressed appreciation for
our hospitality and food, and promised to visit us again. He congratulated our division on the start-up of
the new Aktion Club, and was especially pleased with this news as the NE Aktion Club administrator. Gov
Dave shared the good news that Kiwanis continues to grow internationally. He also emphasized the
importance of growth through service with existing clubs, and encouraged us to make contact with our
inactive members.
Gov Dave presents a Governor’s Pin to John Duncan, for his red jacket;
and to Chuck Hilton, for his “through-snow-sleet-rain-hail” years of postal service.

Thanks Joe and Joe!
Today’s Program: Joe Marino (Sr) from Mashpee spoke to us regarding their Builders Club and how they successfully get
coverage in the local newspaper. His proudest pin is that of Kiwanis Advisor, and he joined Kiwanis specifically to work with kids.
When he first started, there was no KKids Club in Mashpee, but 4 years later it’s thriving. The same approach was used to start his
Builders Club – Critical to start with the superintendent, principal, the advisors, and get a feel for what they expect from you as a
Kiwanian. Their first question will be – what is Kiwanis? There is now a great resource for the Builders Club - Sherry Mckeen –
smckeen@kiwanis.org
– for pamphlets, brochures, etc. Best to make sure the kids run their own clubs, with support of both Kiwanis
and school advisors. Also, ideal to use Robert’s Rules, have 3-4 officers, board of directors, etc. Great lesson to teach them to run
meetings, without hard feelings. Seventh and eighth grade is an especially tough time for kids, with a lot of transition – physically,
emotionally, and socially. Our aim is to help them build character through honesty, courage, integrity, good repute, i.e., to help
shape good citizens for the future. This is a real challenge in our environment today, where we hear a lot about the bad, but not
enough emphasis is on the good. For Joe, he is just there for support – it’s the kids who are the real teachers.
Regarding newspaper coverage, Joe worked directly with the editor of the local newspaper - aka pestered, hounded – and
continued to tell her how much these clubs need to be honored as much as possible. The bad part is that despite his success, they
soon became known just as KKids, Key Club, etc. but the word Kiwanis was nowhere to be found. This continues to be a tough
challenge. He stressed how important it is that we get media coverage – newspapers, cable TV, etc. To start, he encouraged us to
write our own articles to give to them to see if that works.
