Club Updates and Events
Birthdays: Claire Junkins – 1/3 Anniversaries: Bob and Helen Duarte – 1/3
Health and Wellness: Mary Jane reported that Rev Myron sounds very good – his voice was
strong, and it seems like he is on the road to recovery – good news indeed! She made a
number of other holiday calls: Left a message for the Dinsmores. The Pascos are both fine.
Carl Meyer sounds like his old self. The Smiths are freezing down in Florida and they have
“shrunken” fruit. Bob Prew’s daughter reported the sad news that both her Mother and
Stepfather passed away within a week – We will send a card. Calls were also made to Rev
Ernie’s son, and Dan and Mitzi Holmes.
Builders Club: They met yesterday and the kids in attendance were “wired” and “gung ho”.
Tomorrow’s project – 8 members will be leaving at 6am to serve breakfast to the homeless at
the federated church. They already have ½ of a water jug full of can tabs for the Ronald
McDonald House, and are busy managing the school’s lost and found. This year they will
again sell candy grams for Valentine’s Day during lunch with delivery to the homerooms.
They expressed interest in bringing back Bingo at the Epoch Center on Route 124 in
Brewster, which was a project our own club used to sponsor.
Harw ich High School Key Club: Their last meeting had a very big turnout with 19 members
in attendance. A bit of work is needed in terms of a more formal meeting structure, but they
are very enthusiastic. Some ideas include a ping pong match and talent show. Their hat and
mitten tree for the Family Pantry was very successful. They now have 35 members, and their
two newest members are boys!
Nauset Regional High School Key Club: 20 members met on Wednesday with a great deal
of enthusiasm. They are starting to collect recyclables, and may do a tag sale. They plan to
meet again next week.
50/50 Raffle Winner: Len Harwich Wishing Well: $109 was recently collected.

Announcements
Rev Richard shared a “Hello and Happy New Year to all of his Kiwanis friends” note that
Bernie Golden had sent from Florida along with his annual dues. He writes that he is so
relaxed, most days he has no idea what day of the week it is – sounds delightful!
Len reported that two employees from Friends’ Market stopped him the other day and thanked
him for the gift of the extra Cranberry Breads from our Fall Community Bake.
Bob Duarte confessed that he was a polar bear this year on January 1
st
at Bank Street Beach,
and that he “just dove in”. Bets were taken as to whether a Speedo was involved, but
according to Bob, the answer is no. (Dear Reader – there may be a photo forthcoming, so
you can see for yourself – keep an eye out for future newsletters!). On a warmer note, Bob
also announced that May 29
th
has been selected for the Camp Dream Day cleanup.

Board Business
- Jack D reported on the club finances through December. Len reminded us that all board
minutes and financial statements are now posted on our “for members” website.
- Before leaving the Cape, Lou Berninger had donated a “ton” of diapers; and Susan had
also given Mary Jane a lot of baby clothes, for A Baby Center – thank you, Lou and
Susan! Both were greatly appreciated. Mary Jane also mentioned what a great time
everyone had with Susan as a clown doing face painting.
- For the March 5
th
mid-winter convention, the club will pay the $15 registration fee with
proof of payment and registration for all who attend. Len and Susan have been chosen
as our delegates to the International Conference in Las Vegas in June, with Bob W and
Irene as the alternates.
- Len succeeded in getting through to the Cape Cod Times on the morning of January 4
th
to
obtain a free full page ad on May 16, 2011. Great work, Len!
- On the members front, Dick Morello and Pablo recently requested Leaves of Absence
until Spring. Bob Prew was voted in as an honorary member. Kathy Magnusson sent us
a letter of resignation from our club, which the Board regretfully accepted.
- John Maihos sent our club information on Kiwanis lifetime membership. A member of any
club can pay $695, with no annual dues needed thereafter. If you would like more
information on this, Rev Richard has the details.
- Safe Harbor was visited recently by Susan, Len and Sheba (the Golden). An upcoming
project for our Club will be the makeover/painting of 3 rooms – one per month starting in
February. An upgrade of their playground may be a division project. Over the holidays,
the Rosens delivered 450+ toiletry items, and some calendars. In addition to the work
Safe Harbor does for battered families, they now have a program for homeless veterans.
- This year, Len suggested that we purchase an item of need for RHCI. Based on feedback
from Anne Haney, the Board voted in favor of giving a targeted donation for the purchase
of new toys and games used as part of their child rehabilitation programs.

$ $ $ HAPPY DOLLARS $ $ $
Club members had many Happy New Year’s $$. Ginny was very happy that her daughter completed her Bachelor’s
Degree from UMass Boston; Glen for a good Florida trip; Ed for the vitality of our group; and Jack B for his key club
kids. Hal gave a “we miss you” $ in honor of Dave and Muriel Wadsworth. Charlie was relieved that the move of his
95 year old mother-in-law from CT to the Cape went smoothly. Bob D gave a Happy Birthday Elvis $ - Who would
have known? John Harz, hopeful and sad $$ were also given – the sad one by Len for reality hitting hard next week!
And last, but not least, Anton had a (mixed feelings) $ for the many grammatical and biblical scholars in our club.
Today’s Guest Speakers were Kathleen Seymour and Katie Mueller, both volunteers with AmeriCorps Vista.
Kathleen is working on populating the Mass211 database with appropriate organizations from the Cape and Islands.
Mass211 is designed to be a health and human service resource line that can be called in times of personal need
(legal services, food pantries, rides for seniors) and regional or national emergencies (H1N1, hurricane shelters). Katie
is working on the establishment of an extensive volunteer network for Cape Cod. The initial phase is a website that will
centralize all information about local nonprofit organizations and the volunteer opportunities they offer. The second
phase will be the creation of a regional “drop-in” center to help members of the community find ways of contributing
their time and talents to others. Both Kathleen and Katie are looking for volunteers to assist with these efforts,
including the testing of the Mass211 phone line and volunteer website. More information may be found at
Mass211.org and capecodfoundation.org, or contact
cmueller@capecodfoundation.org
