Club and Committee Updates
Birthdays: Kathy Magnusson 12/7; Christine Johnson 12/11; Claire Junkins 1/3
Anniversaries: George and Elinor Dinsmore 12/10; Anton and Sherry Anderson 12/20; Bob
and Helen Duarte 1/3
Health and Wellness: Rev Myron is making a slow recovery, but is getting a little stronger
every day.
Interclubs: We met our Early Bird challenge with an interclub in Sandwich on 12/3, attended
by Irene, Len, Ty, Mary Jane, Sam and Bob W. We are all still in disbelief that Mary Jane ate
the “whole thing!”
Key Clubs: Nauset Regional High School has 15 members and the club is ready to move
forward. They have elected officers and are getting involved in projects. The Harwich High
School club has put up a hat and mitten tree. The idea is to load it to the point that it falls
over. Sounds like fun!
Builders Club: Builders Club members have received their ID cards, pins and booklets as
well as a copy of our brochure. They are looking forward to doing a joint project with the
Nauset Regional High School Key Club.
Wishing Wells: $61.51 was collected from the Orleans Wishing Well in November. Bob D
asked that if we are in either store and notice that the well could use a cleanup, please use
one of the sanitizing wipes at the store entrance and give it a once over. Kristin Stewart has
volunteered to collect the money from Orleans in Pablo's absence. Thanks!
50/50 Raffle: Anton (12/4); Jack B (12/11)

On the News Front . . .
KPTI: Their annual Open House was held on Saturday, December 5. Our club did have some
lucky winners in the big raffle. Congratulations!
Sam and Mary Jane have delivered diapers given by Lou Berninger to A Baby Center in
Hyannis. They will be making a second trip to drop off toiletries and calendars to Safe
Harbor. Len, Susan and Ginny have an appointment to meet with the Safe Harbor
director, Betsy, to tour some of the residences to see what our club can do for a room
makeover in the spring. They will also look into whether this would be a good Division project.
Bike Rodeo: The Finance Committee recommended to the Board that we cosponsor a Bike
Rodeo with the Dennis Police Association and the Dennis Small Business Association. This
was approved. The rodeo had previously been a project of the Dennis-Yarmouth club. Mike
and Evelyn Sheehan have volunteered to chair this spring event.
Evelyn is also working diligently on membership. Please give her a call if you are interested
in assisting with this important effort!
Club Memorabilia: Irene has offered to collect and archive club memorabilia. Please see
her if you have anything that you think should be kept for posterity--or maybe a time capsule.
We already have a number of items from Dianne Wadsworth that she has donated from
Dave's Kiwanis mementos, including a 50-year membership certificate and clock.
Our "This Is Your Life" speaker on December 4th was Michael Smith who, having been
born in Attleboro and not moving to the Cape until he was 10, is officially a washashore. He is
a descendant of the Doty family who came over on the Mayflower; and can also trace ancestry
back to the Micmac Indians of Nova Scotia. Michael has owned a number of businesses, and
now owns Medical Alarms USA, LLC, with offices located in Dennisport and Venice, FL. He
and Susan have been married for 23 years. Daughter Jennifer and her family live in Ashland,
MA and Emily and her partner, Melissa, live in NH with their many animals. Grandchildren
Kiera, 4, and Quinn, 1, are delightful. Michael is a Life Member of Kiwanis, has served as
District Spiritual Aims Chair, is a Distinguished Lt Gov, past president of the D-Y Club and
Lower Cape, member of the Legion of Honor and Heritage Foundation, and is a Hikson
Fellow. He is active in the business community and volunteers in several
organizations outside of Kiwanis. In wrapping up his talk, he "showed and told" us about his
fire truck collection. He only brought a few of his 2000 that he thought would be of particular
interest. Thank you, Michael, for sharing your life before you head off to FL. (p.s. Stop by
Michael's office sometime for a tour!)

A Time of Year to be Thankful ~
Over the last few weeks, many Thank Yous have been received for
our recent donations and for the cranberry breads. We also
contributed to the First Lady's project, Operation Tribute, with a
donated basket at the Fall Training Conference for which she was very
appreciative.
Thanks to Lt Gov Jack Brown for a very successful and enjoyable
Governor’s Dinner at the Yarmouth House on 12/1.
Speaking of Thank Yous--Thank You Pablo and Terry for a GREAT
HOLIDAY PARTY! Have a safe trip to Puerto Rico. See you in April.
Thank you, too, Christine Johnson for the incredible baskets you put
together for the Raffle.
And, thanks to all club members who donated 24 new toys for Toys
for Tots. Thank you, Irene, for coordinating this project and
transporting them (with Len and Sheba) to the Stuff-a-Bus in front of
Toys R Us in Hyannis.
On December 11, we were pleased to have Joe Manas as our guest speaker. After retiring to the Cape, Joe became
a guide for the French Cable Museum in Orleans. His informative talk was augmented by a power point
presentation. It was a fascinating topic and, although only a tip of the iceberg, was enough to whet our appetite to visit
the museum and learn more about this incredible endeavor to connect Europe and North America by cable. The first
message, sent in 1927, was to inform the US of Lindbergh's landing in Paris. A point of trivia that was interesting was
how the terms upper case and lower case came to be used: The capital letters (upper case) were kept on the top shelf
and the small letters (lower case) on the lower shelf. Today there are only three cable museums left: one in Orleans,
one in Newfoundland and one in the UK. Take time out to visit this historical location. You won't be disappointed,
particularly if you are lucky enough to be hooked up with Joe.
