Club Updates and Events
Anniversaries:
4/18 – Joe and Jo Ann Marino; 4/20 - Dick and Jeanne Morello
Interclubs:
An interclub took place yesterday at Mashpee to reclaim gavel – Jack B, Bob W, Sam and
Mary Jane all attended.
Builders Club:
Some Builders Club members will be participating in the Relay for Life. A tentative date has
been set for some members to also attend our meeting on June 4
th
. While Pablo was away,
they have been very busy collecting can tabs. A few of them may also help at the Pancake
Breakfast. They still have some $$ left in their budget for the year, and will be deciding where
to donate it.
Nauset Regional High School Key Club:
Dick Morello gave the report, and it was the 1
st
time he has actually seen the club in action.
The President is incredible – She runs a great meeting, and is very enthusiastic. They got 10
volunteers to go to Safe Harbor for the Division Project. They are planning an induction in
June, to say thank you to the old officers and induct the new ones for next year – it would be
great for us to support this event.
50/50 Raffle Winner:
Jack D was the lucky winner, and he gave his winnings to the Administrative Fund. A number
of Dave Wadsworth memorial Kiwanis buttons were also given out to Jack B and Rev
Richard.

Announcements
This is the last week to donate to the Skip-a-Meal program.
Last night there was another Aktion Club meeting. They voted for 4 director positions – with
8 folks in the running. On May 5
th
, a training program is planned for all incoming officers.
Len will be working with their new Treasurer.
This Saturday will be the Safe Harbor Division project. Work on the new play set begins at
8am, rain or shine
?
The Mashpee K Kids were great supporters of this project, recently
voting to contribute $300 to help fund the play set. Another $150 was received from the
Mashpee Club yesterday, from a variety of donors.
The new Bourne Kiwanis Club will hold another luncheon meeting next Tuesday at Mezza
Luna – all are welcome.
From all reports, the Springfield convention was great, with 33 kids and adults attending from
the Cape. Anton read e-mails to us from two of the Nauset Key Club attendees, with deep
expressions of gratitude and excitement regarding all that was learned.
$ $ $ Happy Dollars $ $ $
Happy $$ were gladly given for our guest, just being happy, our wonderful club, and the
Nauset Key Clubbers. In addition, Scooter (the pup) is 90% healed; and Christine has (only!)
2-3 more weeks of working with him. There were many generous Kiwanians who helped
financially with the Safe Harbor project. Happy Anniversary from Dick. A Happy 96
th
Birthday
$ was given in honor of Charlie’s mother-in-law. Pablo had a hopeful $ for the Pancake
Breakfast. A $ was given in tribute to Jack D who has no computer – “one of the wisest men
that Sam knows”. Kristin was very happy for her daughter’s stellar grade report. And, our
speaker gave in honor of the life of Moses – see program summary below.

Today’s Program: Ellen Aldrich from Visiting Angels was our guest speaker today. The agency began 10 years
ago, but they have only been servicing Cape Cod for the past 1 1/2 years. Visiting Angels is a franchise agency that
provides non-medical health care to those in need, often working hand-in-glove with Visiting Nurses. Their goal is to
help seniors stay at home; with a mission to provide the best possible service in a competent, compassionate and
professional manner. Some of their services include – companionship, conversation, rides for coffee, ice cream
excursions, or going to the beach, art gallery or museum. Light housekeeping, meals, laundry, showering, and
bathing may also be involved based on the person’s needs. In addition, transportation to doctor’s appointments,
doing errands, and medication reminders are also available. They only hire caregivers with experience, and have a
rigorous screening process, including a nationwide Cory check; with orientation and on-going supervision of their
employees. They aim to make sure there is a good fit between the caregiver and the senior, and then the care plan is
developed to meet that person’s needs. They are also HIPAA certified, so confidentiality is ensured. For the most
part, payment is out-of-pocket, although some long-term health insurance plans may help, as well as VA benefits.
Ellen became inspired to do this work from her missionary work in Jamaica. There she worked with an agency -
Missionaries of the Poor – which had the same goal. It was a great inspiration for her to work with the seniors there,
where they were so very grateful for a simple meal, and just to stay in their own home. It was there that she met
Moses, a little boy with a slight case of cerebral palsy, who had been abandoned by his mother. They met him
several years ago, fell in love with him, and brought him to the US for medical care at Children’s Hospital. He is
about to turn 4 years old, and will soon be adopted.
