Today’s Program: Dianne Wadsworth shared with us some stories of her life, including memories of her Mom and
Dad. Dianne was the oldest of 4 children, and one of two girls. When she was in the 3
rd
grade, the family moved to
Italy. They first lived in a dinky little apartment, and had a maid with “rough edges”. When the maid allowed them to
go swimming in the very polluted Tiber River, her mother fired the maid. They soon moved into a very plush place with
two maids – even better. She grew up walking about the gutters of Rome, picking up all sorts of treasures – lire,
plastic tops, etc. One soldier actually thought she was a waif! She has a lot of wonderful memories from that time.
After Italy, the family moved to Huntington, LI, NY. Her younger sister had learned to speak in Italian, and she knew
very little English, so Dianne was her translator for awhile. They had a lovely home, but they lived next door to the high
school principal, so she had to be good. Her parents had middle class friends, with prep school sons . . . .but Dianne
preferred greaser sons and hotrodders, which created quite a conflict with her parents! She had some very interesting
dates in high school (contact Dianne for details!!). With no plans to leave such a lovely, safe home, her Mother
basically made her leave the nest . As a result, she went to NY with a portfolio, having studied art, but did not get
very far. So, that was when she tried out for the airlines – but did not get accepted the first time because she was too
tall! She went back to college so she could still live at home [Might she be the very first “boomerang kid?”]. Then, after
the airlines had modified their rules, the next time she tried out, she got accepted. She loved working for the airlines –
waiting on people, being in the air. Unfortunately, her first base was Kansas City. She tried to tell her parents all sorts
of horror stories so she could come back home – but her Mother wrote her back saying, “Oh grow up!”
At one point in her life, Dianne also lived in a little beach shack in Malibu, CA. There, she packed a Smith and
Wesson, and slept with it under her pillow. Between that, t he hot plate, the little shower, and the deck overlooking the
ocean, she loved it . . . . and so did her parents! They had a lot of fun there, and good memories. – End of Chapter 1 –
