$ $ $ Happy Dollars $ $ $
Many club members were “just happy”. In addition, the Smiths were glad to be back home on
Cape Cod. Kristin had a sad $ for her dog, who was in the ER, and ouch on the wallet!
Many were glad to see the Smiths. Pablo was happy for all the help for the upcoming
Pancake Breakfast. Dick was glad for the cherry blossoms, Charlie was praying for good
weather, Hal was hopeful for the Reds Soxs, and Ed was thankful for all that Pablo is doing
for the Pancake Breakfast. Mike shared all the many many many things that he and Susan
have been doing with Kiwanis while in Florida. And, Anton was happy for the Key Club and
for today’s speaker.

Today’s Program: Our speaker today was Sandy Topalian, PhD, who is the Southeastern Regional Manager of the
Brain Injury Association of MA (BIA-MA). This organization was founded in 1980, and they provide services to the
southeast region of Massachusetts, including the Cape and Islands.
Some of the hard facts shared by Sandy included:
A brain injury occurs every 23 seconds in the US.
The annual incidence of brain injury is 8 times that of breast cancer and 20 times that of HIV/AIDS.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death and disability in young adults.
Some of the programs their organization offers include:
Assisting Kiwanis Clubs with car seats
Providing support services to survivors and their families
Offering programs to prevent brain injuries
Educating the public on the risks and impact of brain injury
Advocating for legislation and improved community services.
